To call a club or a country that is involved in a game of football a dark horse can be seen as a very loaded statement these days. With the Euro 2016 Championship kicking off this coming Friday, no one really knows which country will lift the trophy at the end of the tournament.
Never underestimate the power of the underdog
As they say, never underestimate the power of the underdog. Many have come to realize that it is very dangerous to do that. Like the famous story of David and Goliath in the bible, Goliath underestimated the power of young David and that resulted in him being defeated.
The beautiful game has grown into that level these days, there is now too much respect for the so called smaller teams or countries.
Over the years we have seen shocks
It all started with current Barclays Premier League champions Leicester City. They went from being underdogs to champions in a space of a year. In the previous world cups we have seen the likes of Cape Verde Island giving other nations real problems in the tournament. In this year’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers we have seen Guinea-Bissau qualify for the first time in history. The list goes on and on.
The European Championship will no doubt see another underdog rise for the big occasion. The question is, Who will be the victim and the perpetrator this time around? Let us wait and see.
A lot of underdogs have won the Euros before like Greece in 2004 and Denmark in 1992 so nobody really knows who will win, Keep up the good work
